Ban on sale and supply of single use vapes

24 October 2024/in News/by Iain Stevens

‘New legislation to ban the sale of single-use vapes from 1 June 2025 has been laid in Parliament.

Last year, it was estimated that almost five million single-use vapes were either littered or thrown away in general waste every week in the UK, almost four times as much as the previous year and the equivalent of eight being thrown away per second.

Circular Economy Minister Mary Creagh said:

Single-use vapes are extremely wasteful and blight our towns and cities.

That is why we are banning single use vapes as we end this nation’s throwaway culture.’

Nine imprisoned for operating illegal waste site

18 October 2024/in News/by Iain Stevens

‘Nine people have been sentenced for the operation of an illegal waste site in rural Lincolnshire, following an investigation by the Environment Agency.

The prosecution was brought against individuals that ran the illegal waste site; burned the waste; drove waste to the site and the landowners. Two waste brokers were also prosecuted.’

This case is one of many, reflecting ongoing work by the Environment Agency (Gov.uk) to crack down on Waste Crime.

If you suspect waste crime, visit our Report it page for more details and who to contact.

Litter-picking pioneers expand scheme across city

17 September 2024/in News/by Iain Stevens

‘A community-led litter-picking initiative in Plymouth has proved so popular it is set to expand across the city’, the BBC reports.

‘The group said it was now setting up and equipping 10 hubs across the city where local volunteers could organise their own litter-picking events, which was being funded partly by a £15,000 grant to the city by Great Western Railway.

It was hoped the new hubs would be up and running by April, the group said.’

‘Thank you’ says Clean Devon.

Plans to recycle more abandoned boats

9 September 2024/in News/by Iain Stevens

‘More abandoned boats are being targeted for recycling after a successful pilot project in south Devon’ the BBC reports.

A report into the pilot project identified ‘delayed awareness in the issues we now face’ with the management and disposal of fibreglass vessels. ‘Essentially, this results in the maritime version of fly tipping, but with a wider and deeper environmental impact.’

With ‘no requirement in the UK to register ownership of a vessel, insure or hold qualifications for its operation’, at the end of the vessel’s useful life, ‘owners ‘are left with something they cannot afford to moor or maintain. It is a simple matter to either sell on or walk away from a vessel. As there is no registration system, it is very difficult to trace owners or hold them accountable’.

‘The challenge associated with both abandoned and EOL [end of life] vessels is that, until the implementation of this pilot, there was no available or practicable solution within the UK.’

Read the full report to understand the scope of the challenge and options moving forwards for this growing problem.

There is more to litter picking than picking litter

5 August 2024/in News/by Iain Stevens

A recent BBC news story ‘Baby dormice found at reserve for first time‘ highlights the positive and valuable work carried out by many landowners throughout the County to encourage and protect our native species.

‘Fortunately, here in east Devon we have good dormouse populations and as long as woodlands, hedgerows and scrubby grounds are maintained and allowed to exist and treated carefully, dormice do particularly well in our county.’

So whilst in managed environments nature is thriving, Keep Britain Tidy estimate that ‘around four million small mammals – shrews and mice that are essential members of our ecosystems, die every year imprisoned in littered bottles and cans’ particularly on our road verges.

Hazel dormouse trapped and killed in discarded wine bottle in East Devon.

So litter picking is not just about tidying up, but as valuable in improving our environment as the dedication of those landowners and gardeners providing safe habitats for our endangered and native species.

Every bottle or can removed from our countryside, road verges and hedges has the potential to save countless inquisitive lives of small animals, like the poor dormouse pictured above from an East Devon lane. It’s easy to get involved.

Litter doesn’t just kill once.

If you see litter (that you can’t remove yourself) or fly tipping (don’t try to remove that due to potential risks), report it.

Farmers – Protect yourselves from waste criminals

30 July 2024/in News/by Iain Stevens

‘A wet winter has meant it’s been a difficult start to the year for many farmers. Facing reduced early crop yields or worse still, zero yields, the temptation to cut costs or diversify, to find additional income is more tempting than ever.

Unfortunately, this makes farmers an ideal target for unscrupulous waste operators who are more than willing to take advantage of people under greater financial pressure. Whether it is an offer of a “cheap tip” of materials that can be used to repair roads and tracks or an agreement to secure land for spreading or storage of materials in farm buildings.’

This Environment Agency blog provides useful precautions for landowners to protect themselves from waste criminals.

‘As a rule of thumb, if it has been removed from somewhere, it is surplus to requirements or it has been through some kind of sorting or treatment process (such as crushing) it’s safer to assume it is a waste.’

Devon man sentenced to 32 months for dumping waste on floodplain

15 July 2024/in News/by Iain Stevens

‘Devon man Christopher Garrett has been jailed for 32 months after he dumped thousands of tonnes of waste, including asbestos, on land by his home, in a floodplain near Kingsteignton in Devon. He was also ordered to pay a Proceeds of Crime Act confiscation sum of over £200,000.

Christopher Garrett buried asbestos in floodplain in what is thought to be the worst offence of its kind in Devon and Cornwall.

Around 12,000 tonnes of controlled mixed construction and demolition waste was deposited on land designated as a floodplain.

Anyone who suspects illegal waste activity can report it anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111′
